DULF Legal Aid Fund Update – 10/15/26
We wait for the State to appeal.
No one knows when the summons will arrive. No one knows whether it has already been written, signed, and placed in a drawer somewhere. We know only that the silence is temporary, and that the machinery, once awakened, will demand to be fed.
The judgment had been rendered. For a moment, we were permitted to believe that the doors might open. But the doors of the Court do not lead outside. They lead to other rooms, other hearings, other men in dark suits explaining why the matter cannot yet be considered concluded.
We have raised $779,385 of the $900,000 required to continue. The remaining $120,615 hangs over us like an unanswered charge. We must find it before the State decides our time has come.
There is something especially cruel about being made to finance the machinery that threatens to consume you. The invoices arrive regardless of whether the State appeals. The clock advances regardless of whether the Court speaks. Somewhere, someone is deciding our future. We are expected to pay for the privilege of learning what they decide.
And so we continue asking. Not because we know what comes next, but because we have learned what happens to those who arrive at the gates unprepared. The law has no obligation to be merciful to the underfunded. It need not even be unkind. Indifference is sufficient.

The State has not yet spoken.
We cannot afford to mistake its silence for peace.
