DULF Legal Aid Fund Update – 09/01/26
The woman sat at her desk and raised money. The administration of the fundraiser gave her endless work. She could have had assistants, as many as she wanted, but since she took her work very seriously, she counted everything herself, and thus the assistants were of little help to her.
It cannot be said that she enjoyed the work. She did it only because it had to be done. She had already made many requests for different work, but whenever something else was suggested, it turned out that nothing suited her quite as well as fundraising. And anyhow, it was difficult to find something else for her.
What irritated her most was the continual demand for more money. She had raised money yesterday, and the day before yesterday, and for so long before that that she could no longer remember what she had done before the fundraiser began. Yet the amount required remained $900,000.
She had lost all her money.
She had so much debt.
She would have to get a second job.
There was the mortgage, the student loans, the retirement, and the contract from which she could not get out. She had sacrificed everything to the fundraiser.
“I’ll never be able to retire,” she said.
Nobody answered.
“I can’t even die,” she said, “because my loved ones will have to bear the burden of my financial obligations.”
Nobody answered this either.
“What am I supposed to do, fish?”
There was a fish in the room.
It looked at her.
She looked at it.
“What a fucking tragedy,” she said.
“A real fucking tragedy.”
Then she returned to the figures.
DULF had raised $765,825.75 of the required $900,000.
Only $134,174.25 remained.
She wrote the number down.
The next morning she raised another $400.
The following morning she raised nothing.
The morning after that, she died.
The administration was informed of her death and entered it into the appropriate record. Her account was closed.
There remained, however, a balance of $134,174.25.
The fundraiser therefore continued.
