DULF Legal Aid Fund Update – 08/15/26
There was once a woman who had been entrusted with a great and peculiar task.
She was told that nine hundred thousand dollars must be gathered, and that until the sum was complete, she would have to continue asking, explaining, accounting, thanking, reminding, and asking again.
So she did.
She stood at the gates of the city and called out to the people. Some gave generously. Some gave reluctantly. Some promised to give tomorrow. Others asked why the money was necessary, and when she explained, asked whether it could perhaps be explained differently.
Years seemed to pass, although it was not clear whether years had actually passed.
At last, the woman sat down at her desk and looked at the figure before her:
$764,456.45 / $900,000
She stared at it for a long time.
Then she calculated the difference.
There remained $135,543.55.
The woman felt a profound weariness descend upon her.
She thought of all the messages that had been answered, all the forms that had been completed, all the meetings in which someone had said, “We are very close now,” and all the evenings during which she had assured herself that surely, surely, the final amount would soon appear.
A messenger entered the room.
“How much remains?” the messenger asked.
“$135,543.55,” said the woman.
“And what will you do?”
The woman looked out the window.
Beyond the city was a river. Beyond the river was a forest. Beyond the forest, no one had yet established a committee.
“I am going fishing,” she said.
“But the campaign?”
“The campaign will continue.”
“But the remaining money?”
“It remains.”
“But you cannot simply leave.”
The woman put on her coat.
For a moment, the messenger thought she might object, might demand an explanation, might produce a spreadsheet showing exactly why the woman was morally obligated to remain at her desk until the last dollar had been obtained.
Instead, she picked up her fishing rod.
“Surely,” she said, “if the world requires another $135,543.55 from me, it can come and find me at the river.”
And so she went.
She walked beyond the city, beyond the committees, beyond the inbox in which every unanswered message had begun to resemble a small accusation.
At the river, she cast her line.
Nothing happened.
For the first time in many months, this seemed perfectly reasonable to her.
Behind her, somewhere in the city, the great campaign continued toward its mysterious conclusion.
The total remained:
$764,456.45
The goal remained:
$900,000
And the woman, sitting quietly beside the water, discovered that for one afternoon at least, neither number was asking her to do anything.
She watched the float upon the river.
She waited.
And, having finally understood that waiting was sometimes the only task left to a tired woman, she was almost happy.
The fish, however, remained completely indifferent to fundraising for DULF.
