The situation has become difficult to describe without resorting to the language of nightmares.

Since the beginning of this campaign, $628,825.65 has been raised toward a goal of $900,000.

The number appears encouraging at first glance. It possesses the shape of progress. It suggests momentum. It permits brief moments of optimism.

But numbers are deceptive creatures.

What the figure truly conceals is that, after months of work, appeals, meetings, events, and increasingly desperate requests, we have reached only 70% of what is required.

The remaining distance is not theoretical. It is not symbolic. It is measured in legal filings, expert testimony, preparation, research, and the countless invisible costs involved in challenging a system that possesses vastly more resources than those attempting to oppose it.

Every day the campaign continues, the deficit remains.

Every day the deadline approaches, the deficit remains.

Every day people congratulate us on how far we have come, and still the deficit remains.

It sits there with the patience of a bureaucrat. It does not negotiate. It does not care how hard anyone has worked. It merely waits to determine whether this effort will survive.

One develops the unsettling feeling that the campaign is being judged by an unseen tribunal. The charges are unclear. The procedures are obscure. The outcome appears to have been decided long ago. Yet everyone is expected to continue filing papers, organizing events, making arguments, and hoping that somewhere within the machinery there remains the possibility of mercy.

There may not be.

And yet there is work to do.

People often ask what they can do.

The answer is increasingly simple.

Donate.

Attend the event.

Purchase a ticket.

Bring a friend.

Learn something.

Share information.

Because despite appearances, despite the exhaustion, despite the growing sense that we are attempting to move a mountain with our bare hands, the matter remains unresolved.

The goal is $900,000.

We have reached $628,825.65.

The difference between those two numbers is a gulf wide enough to determine whether this challenge proceeds or falters.

The file remains open.

For now.

In court, final arguments are scheduled for July 13–21.
